We have been enjoying watching Hummingbird Moths (also called Sphinx Moths) feeding on the hostas blooming outside our kitchen window. Tonight, as my husband's guitar students were leaving, one decided to come in for a short visit, probably attracted by the lights in the living room.
They are really quite impressive measuring around 2" in length and resemble hummingbirds when they feed on flowers. Their wings move in the same way and they are experts at hovering.
He (or she) was gently captured and released into the night.

It looks lovely in the photo but I must admit that moths give me the willies! I don't know if he would have survived at my house.
ReplyDeleteAround here, we do the capture and release - I have a strong sense of compassion for animals and bugs (mostly... mosquitoes or flies who can't leave me alone usually get it!). Butterflies and moths are the easiest - they don't bite and are happy, I think, to not be in the house anymore :)
