Cool Vintage Stuff!

Some very cool vintage stuff came my way via a family member the other day. I was going to take lots of pics as I sorted and cleaned but got excited and completely forgot after the first few items... sorry.

Goodies in the mail!!

Well, this wonderful shipment of jewelry to upcycle and remix should get me back on the right track... so many wonderful bits and bobs! I got all of these lots from pocket-full-of-rye on *that other auction site* - find her stuff by clicking here.

Wait... I have a WHAT in my studio??

This is what I thought last night after doing a major clean out in my studio. I had suspected as much, and now I am certain... yes... I actually have a TABLE in my studio! And now it's clean and organized and I can SIT at it and have room to work. Amazing...

Here, look... I have pictures to prove it!

On to prettier things!

*Phew!* Taxes are finished! Yay! I can start thinking about other things... prettier things....

I have been getting better about taking photos of new projects I'm working on. As much as I try to stick with ONE project, though, I always seem to have 3 or 4 going at the same time - all in various states of "unfinished". They are, as follows:

1. Unicorn jewelry project - Not done... not even close.

2. New Asian-themed shadow box idea - Getting there...

3. Really cool (IMO!) assemblage built around a vintage tintype - Just need the right substrate...

So, there you have it! Three that are in-progress, but... one creation that actually did reach completion is "Dreamers of Dreams"...

It is a sweet and simple found box with a Wade porcelain unicorn and millinery rose trees. The background has a layer of vintage book illustrations collaged with tissue paper and a printed quote from Arthur O'Shaughnessy (as said by Gene Wilder in Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory): "We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams."

My version of it leaves out the "and" in the middle (Geez, I hope that's OK!). It's a shelf sitter - perfect for that little one who loves horses/unicorns. You can find it in my Etsy shop with other handcrafted treasures!

Packages in the mail! Yay!

I truly love Etsy and I try to spend as little time on *that other auction site* as possible but the other day, I saw some stuff I simply couldn't pass up! The first to arrive was this offering of vintage jewelry...

Like, WOW! Right? There's no way you can blame me for being weak! Lovely bits and bobs - some in perfect condition, vintage and salable - they may go in my vintage shop. Everything in such a perfect color palette for me - browns, golds, touches of peach and copper... yum. I know I'll regret sending others but if you want to get one of these great jewelry lots for yourself - check out "barzone" on eBay.

Another eBay find was a lot of old wooden knobs - roughly 100 in all. I had been thinking of using wood knobs as "feet" for my assemblage boxes but they're expensive and I'm a cheapskate and I want to re-use and upcycle and buying them new at the store just doesn't count! *whew* So, this wonderful trove came along right when I needed it...

My first soft sculpture

The idea of creating soft sculpture objects has been floating around in my mind for a very long time. Finally, last week I dove in! "The Artful Bird" by Abigail Patner Glassenberg has been hanging around my house for may weeks now. I am lucky to have a wonderful local library that (seems to) happily order just about any book I request. It ordered "The Artful Bird" on my recommendation and it has been in my possession since. Finally, they told me I couldn't renew it anymore (shucks!) so I decided I had better quit just looking at the darned thing and actually MAKE one of the projects in it. I chose the "beginner" project - The Wren.

The fabric I used was some embroidered vintage linen pieces I tea dyed during one of my private art retreats. I started by copying and cutting out the pattern pieces.

After cutting out the pieces for the main body, I had sewed them together, stuffed my bird with lots of fiber-fill and added some bent wire legs and feet. I was planning to photo each step but I was just too excited about making it and forgot to stop for pics.

After making the main body, the next step was to make the wing and tail pieces. I chose to use the embroidered sections of the vintage linens for the wings and tail. At first, I was cutting out each piece separately - the wing top, the wing back and the felt that I was using instead of batting.

Then I figured out that I just needed to cut out the wing back, stack the pieces and sew them together. After that it was easy to trim the pieces to the proper size. 

Again, I got too excited to take photos of turning the wing pieces and attaching them (*sorry*) but the wings were sewn to the body and embellished with antique shell buttons. For the eyes I used some pretty clear seed beads with gold color inside and finally the entire piece was balanced and the legs were wrapped with florist's tape. I did improvise on the beak - it is not the beak as shown in the book.

I had a great time making him and am quite fond of him! He will have to be part of my own private menagerie since I won't sell anything made for another's patterns but this little project has inspired me to try to develop my own. I hope you like him! :)
